Your own father, and the pattern you inherited

Becoming a dad drags up your own childhood whether you invited it or not. What to do with that.

Almost every man reports it. Somewhere in the first year you catch yourself using a phrase, or a tone, or a silence, and realise exactly where it came from.

Three versions of this

He was good and he is gone. You are doing something enormous without the one person you would most want to ask. Grief arrives sideways, often at odd moments like a first birthday.

He was there and it was complicated. You are now doing his job with adult eyes, which reframes things you had filed away. Some of it becomes more forgivable. Some becomes considerably less.

He was absent or worse. You have no template, which is frightening, and a very clear sense of what you will not do, which is a real advantage. Men in this position often become exceptional fathers, precisely because nothing is on autopilot.

What helps

  • Name the specific things, not the general feeling. "I want to be at things" and "I do not want my kid to be frightened of me" are actionable. "I want to be better than him" is not.
  • Notice the inherited reflexes rather than fighting them. The reflex fires first and always will. The gap between the reflex and what you do next is where all the work happens, and that gap widens with practice.
  • Take the good bits deliberately. Even a difficult father usually gave you something. Keeping it is not a betrayal of your own judgement.
  • Say it out loud to somebody once. Your partner, a mate, a therapist. Men carry this silently by default and it gets heavier.

The thing worth knowing

You are not doomed to repeat it, and you are also not going to escape it entirely. What you get is influence: hundreds of small moments where you notice the old pattern arriving and choose something else. That is not a dramatic break with the past. It is just what breaking a cycle actually looks like from the inside.

If the material coming up is heavier than this, particularly if there was abuse, that is worth taking to a professional rather than carrying alone.
