The firsts
The first scan, in plain terms
What happens, what they are looking for, and what to keep quiet about until afterwards.
The 12-week scan is the first time it becomes real. It is also a medical examination. Both things at once.
What they are checking
- That growth is on track.
- That anatomy is forming as expected.
- A nasal bone and the nuchal fold. These are screening markers, not a diagnosis.
What to expect
Cold gel, a pressed bladder, and a screen you cannot quite read. The sonographer is working, not narrating. Ask questions at the end.
What to do afterwards
Go somewhere quiet. Sit down. You have time before you tell anyone. Use it.
